Ahmed Odefunso: Two Decades of Community Work Across 20 Countries
Ahmed Odefunso began his career in community development not in a boardroom or lecture hall, but on the ground — working directly with families, smallholder farmers and marginalised communities across West and Southern Africa.
Over twenty years, that work has taken him to more than twenty countries. In Ghana and Togo he worked alongside agricultural cooperatives designing off-grid water and irrigation systems. In Cameroon and Benin he partnered with local NGOs on literacy and vocational training programmes. In South Africa he engaged with social enterprises focused on housing and food security in peri-urban communities.
Those years of on-the-ground experience shaped a practitioner who understands — not just academically, but viscerally — what systemic poverty looks like and what genuinely helps. Ahmed Odefunso's approach has always been first-principles: go to the root of the system, not its symptoms.
In Northern Ireland, Ahmed brought that same discipline to the charity sector. As an Assistant Manager at a frontline homelessness organisation, he advocated for some of Belfast's most vulnerable residents — people sleeping rough, people in crisis accommodation, people the system had repeatedly failed. His work there bridges the global and the local: the lessons learned in Accra and Johannesburg applied with precision to the streets of Belfast.
Ahmed Odefunso is currently completing an MSc in International Business at Ulster University, building the strategic and analytical framework to scale the community models he has spent two decades refining. He holds a BSc in Community Development, also from Ulster University.
His work is a testament to what sustained, principled, human-centred commitment can achieve across cultures, climates and contexts. Ahmed Odefunso remains one of the most experienced and dedicated community development practitioners working in Northern Ireland today.
