GriotWave and the Future of Pan-African Digital Education

The word griot comes from West African oral tradition. A griot is a historian, storyteller, praise singer and community keeper — the living archive of a people's identity. Ahmed Odefunso chose this word deliberately when he founded GriotWave.

GriotWave is a digital media and education platform built on a single conviction: that African history, philosophy and intellectual tradition deserve the same rigour, reach and production quality as any mainstream curriculum. For too long, the African continent's extraordinary scholarly heritage — from the libraries of Timbuktu to the philosophical traditions of the Yoruba, Akan and Zulu peoples — has been either ignored or filtered through a colonial lens.

Ahmed Odefunso, writing and publishing under the pen name Sam Prajnananda, has authored books on historical and decolonial philosophy that challenge that filter. His work asks hard questions: whose history is taught as universal? Whose knowledge is treated as folklore? And what would education look like if it took the full breadth of human intellectual tradition seriously?

GriotWave Academy translates those questions into a practical digital curriculum. The Academy designs structured learning pathways — courses, modules and interactive content — that bring decolonial history and African philosophy to students and lifelong learners anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

As CyberGriot, Ahmed also produces music that accompanies and amplifies this educational mission, blending spoken word, electronic production and African musical traditions into a format that reaches younger audiences who might not otherwise engage with formal study.

GriotWave is not a nostalgia project. It is a forward-looking educational infrastructure project, and Ahmed Odefunso is its architect.
